Dr. Fredriksen's talk
Just in from Dr. Fredriksen's lecture. Her topic: Augustine and the Jews... most appropriate for an audience in St. Augustine, Florida.
I'm certainly glad I went, I was entertained, educated, and challenged. I'll not bore you on the substance of most of her talk, for that you can read her books. Instead I'll focus on her comments on "The Passion," or in her words, "Mel Gibson's new action film."
I need time to go through my notes, since her talk was more about Augustine's writings about Jews than Mel Gibson. But Gibson was mentioned early and throughout. You have been quoted as saying you were "shocked" by your reading of an early version of Mel Gibson's new screenplay. Would you please comment on the controversy since your first reading last summer and update us on your thoughts particularly in regards to the writings of Catherine Emmerich being the basis of Gibson's story.

You could have at least given a preview of tonight's episode!
I wonder if the Arabs are "shocked" by Disney's The Prince of Egypt... Will it provoke violence between Israel and it's neighbor?
Why do we pick on Gibson...? This movie can only create good will among men. The people who are vociferously criticizing him are doing more to hurt their cause than help.

Precisely, because his critics were mostly Christian, it is more dangerous. I agree the film will probably do a lot of good, but the pre-release debate has done some good too. It's helped to highlight the educational opportunities that will bring the most "good will among men"
Those who respond to criticisms of the film with a defense of Christianity are the ones who worry me.
